Interviewed in the Chinese newspaper China daily in 2017, Helga Zepp-LaRouche explained why, as a German, she is so much supportive of China today.
Although LaRouche’s widow Helga Zepp-LaRouche is running a pro-China party, this new pro-China line wasn’t the LaRouche couple’s stance for most of their life.
Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian wondered in Foreign Policy why LaRouche’s outdated obsessions have been replaced with his “newfound fascination with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative” (the “New Silk Road”).
It’s hard to tell what motivates that interest, whether it’s a remnant of LaRouche’s long-standing obsession with patterns of global trade, or a skillful attempt to appeal to the political mood in Beijing, where the project has become a shibboleth for support of an increasingly powerful Xi.

The logic is that of a political cult. Their audiences are their followers who believe they are part of an inner elite, a conspiracy to combat evil conspiracies (e.g. British, Zionists, etc). Their goal is to influence leaders.
Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian, from the American news publication Foreign Policy and published by the Council on Foreign Relations, commented on “post- Lyndon LaRouche cult” moving to China: … there’s growing evidence the movement has influential followers”, adding that “Nobody’s listening to the LaRouche movement in Berlin. But they might be in Beijing”. She concluded that:
If China is choosing to waste its time and energy on a fringe group, that’s hardly a worry. But there’s the dangerous possibility that Chinese officials and academics actually think the LaRouche movement is a serious Western group.

This strategy is typical of LaRouche’s cult: acting as uninvited “spokespersons” of world political leaders. Lyndon did it with then US president Ronald Reagan while pretending to be his public and unofficial representative against the Soviet regime.

This caused confusion and may have played a role in a near nuclear confrontation between the West and USSR in 1983 (Able Archer ’83). The Reagan administration was not impressed and the IRS/FBI raided LaRouche’s offices for tax fraud in 1986 which sent LaRouche to prison (1989-94).
Until his time spent in prison from 1989 to 1994, Lyndon LaRouche had but negative views against either pre-communist or Communist China. And so did his widow.
LaRouche wrote this AGAINST the “Chinese“:
- LaRouche: against Mao’s China
- LaRouche: China as a world criminal drug trafficker
- LaRouche: the Chinese are ‘genocidalists’
- LaRouche: against Deng Xiaoping’s China
- LaRouche supports Taiwan against China
But after decades of anti-Chinese and anti-communist propaganda, LaRouche suddenly had in 1994 a 180-degrees “change of line”… and the pro-democracy students at Tiananmen Square whom LaRouche and his wife enthusiastically supported were let down by the couple, and … Li-Peng was hailed as a defendor of the industrial development of China against… Great Britain, which in LaRouche’s views incarnates all evils!
After his release from jail in 1994, LaRouche realized his political future, because of his decades-long reputation in Western democracies, was doomed. So he opted to open “new territories” for his propaganda, disinformation, and networking where he is less known: Russia and China.
« Chinese Prime Minister Li Peng and Chancellor Helmut Kohl in Bonn, July 4, 1994. Their economic accords can pave the way for solid industrial and infrastructural development in China, by contrast with the free-market cheap labor zones that are otherwise being set up in China by western financial interests. »
Published in EIR, July 22, 1994 and entitled “Germany and China sign agreements for development of infrastructure,” by Rainer Apel.
This author (Rainer Apel) also defended the new “line” AGAINST the Tienanmen protesters, defending a new alliance with the “real opposition in China”:
«The agreements signed could contribute decisively to allowing the mainland Chinese economy to overcome its chronic problems, the heritage of the Maoist era, and could lead the country out of its current chaos into an era of reconstruction. Certainly the massacre of Chinese students at Tiananmen Square five years ago is not forgotten. But it is still necessary to draw China into the development of a modern Eurasian infrastructure, to prevent the collapse of this immense country. It is only under such conditions that it will be possible to assert human rights in China.
“Germany and China sign agreements for development of infrastructure,” by Rainer Apel; EIR, July 22, 1994.
No one can ignore the fact that the internal situation on the Chinese mainland has hardly improved since the demonstrations and the massacre in 1989. But it is also questionable whether the protests against Li Peng’s visit in Berlin and Weimar (which led to clashes with the police), as justified as they are, actually help to change the situation, particularly when these protests are voiced by people who care nothing for contacts with the real opposition in China, who are the ones most interested in economic development there.»
This other author (Mary Burdman) depicted Li-Peng’s China as opposed to its “deadly enemy… Great Britain.
“Prime Minister Li Peng of China has become the first head of any government to make the danger of a new “Black Friday” financial crash a matter of open diplomacy. […] Li Peng’ s statement is the strongest indication to date, that China’s leaders are committed to preserving the nation from its deadly enemy — Great Britain.”
CHINA’S PRIME MINISTER WARNS OF A NEW WORLD FINANCIAL CRASH, by Mary Burdman, EIR, Dec. 9, 1994.

Where LaRouche wrote, hypocritically:
“The only “Yellow Peril” threatening the world today, is that running up and down the spines of the current harvest of Anglo-American sinophobes. These are typified by such leading elements as: the sinophobes rallied around Baroness Margaret Thatcher’s and Sir Henry Kissinger’s May 1996 Prague Conference, a witches’ coven now scheduled to reconvene in Arizona, in mid-May; Thatcher lackeys such as Sir George Bush and Sir Leon Brittan; Sir Caspar Weinberger and other rabid Anglophiles of the New York Council on Foreign Relations; and, those born-again Tiberiuses and Neros associated with Thatcherite Baroness Caroline Cox’s British-intelligence front, “Christian Solidarity International,” who have turned, recently, from their customary occupation, promoting genocide and war against Africans, to spreading racist hate-propaganda against China. Although this latest epidemic of sinophobic mouth-froth is solidly in that tradition of that British geopolitics which caused the two World Wars of this century, notable British circles, of considerable policy-shaping experience and influence, regard the anti-China rant of Baronesses Thatcher and Cox, and Thatcher’s Sir Leon Brittan, as the strategic folly of shallow braggarts. London, as usual, divides its assaulting forces, complementing its obvious frontal assault with an envelopment of the unwary victim’s flank.”
Hypocritically, LaRouche turned into a great supporter of US president Trump who played on this “Yellow Peril” racist card with the Covid-19 so-called “Chinese virus” threatening the world…
In October 2005, LaRouche even promised: “I’ll get to China sometime“. He never did of course.
HYPOCRISY
LaRouche’s LPAC said: “he [LaRouche, note] was framed up and thrown in prison for five years (1989-1994), by the very same intelligence and judicial networks that have waged the coup against Donald Trump, a coup which now would deny him his duly-elected second term.”
LaRouche officially died on 12 February 2019. On February 24, 2021, his widow Helga Zepp-LaRouche warned in a Press statement that the US organization of the late Lyndon LaRouche, the “LAROUCHEPAC” was too US-centered and de facto was endorsing Trump’s anti-Chinese racist rants:
They increasingly failed to publish articles and videos that were critical of Trump on topics on which Lyndon LaRouche had personally frequently criticized Trump, such as his praise of the Wall Street financial bubble; the anti-China policies that came to dominate his presidency; and so on.
Why “LaRouchePAC” No Longer Represents the Policies of Lyndon LaRouche

“The anti-China escalations that we have fought against over the past weeks have come to a head, with President Trump’s destructive speech today in the Rose Garden, in which he repeated all the major charges against China that you can imagine [emph. added] and proposed taking many of the steps urged by the most despicable of his staff.”
Trump’s China Speech: An Unmitigated Disaster | LaRouchePAC May 30, 2020.
On May 30, 2020, the “LAROUCHEPAC” took on Trump: Trump’s China Speech: An Unmitigated Disaster.
This is pure hypocrisy since Lyndon LaRouche and Helga Zepp-LaRouche were ecstatic at Trump’s election as US president. LaRouche said that Trump’s victory is nothing less than a “Victory For the Universe”! She enthusiastically commented: “Now, what Trump did, which I think is the most important—the moment he got elected he got on the phone and he talked to Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, and all sides afterward confirmed that the intention was to normalize and improve the relationship between the United States and Russia, and the United States and China.”
The LaRouche cult is fanatic about defending “megaprojects” which is the main reason why LaRouche supported and his widow Helga Zepp-LaRouche campaigns for China‘s “Silk Road project“.
WARNINGS
- The LaRouche cult is NOT reliable. Their 180 degrees turn from fully supporting the pro-democracy students at Tiananmen Square in 1989 to fully supporting Communist China and its then-leader Li-Peng five years later, could happen again. This is a political cult that only follows its own internal logic.
- The LaRouche cult was a fanatic supporter of US President Trump and has the poorest and worst view in the US and the rest of the world (see media after LaRouche’s death). They don’t represent the US, far from it.
- The LaRouches have a poor record on pandemics. Their anti-AIDS epidemic Proposition 64 referendum was a bigoted homophobic campaign that blamed gays for the virus. This initiative was comparable to the 2020 Covid19 pandemic being blamed on the Chinese after then US President Donald Trump called it the “China virus” the “Wuhan virus” or “Kung Flu”. Great supporters of Trump, LaRouche et al. never condemned this blatant racism.

Helga Zepp-LaRouche, the widow of American political activist Lyndon LaRouche, indeed traveled to China in 1971 when it was in the midst of the “cultural revolution” (1966-1976). She attended tours organized by the communist regime. Back in Germany, she found Lyndon LaRouche, an obscure US political activist. Both were then Marxist-Leninist communists. She eventually became part of his political sect and on Dec 29, 1977, the two got married in Wiesbaden, a city in West-central Germany, where their European headquarters are still located.
She became the founder of the LaRouche movement’s Schiller Institute in 1984 in order to improve the German-American political and cultural relationships.
In 1996, she returned to China for the first time to attend and speak at a meeting on Eurasian development. She was excited when President Xi Jinping unveiled the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013.
Little if not hardly known at all in China, Helga Zepp-LaRouche presents herself as a Western friend of communist China and a supporter of President Xi Jinping. The trouble is that she’s not telling the whole story.
Although both come from communist backgrounds, she met her future American husband Lyndon LaRouche at a time when he was transforming his political Trotskyist leftist sect into an extremely anti-communist political fascist cult. In 1973-74, LaRouche’s “MOP-UP Campaign” was waged with violence against the Communist Party of the USA (CPUSA).
A red-brown alliance with Willis Carto, via Robert Miles and Roy Frankhouser former KKK officials was completed. LaRouche and Carto met personally in Wiesbaden, Germany in the mid-1970s. By the summer of 1975, it was clear that LaRouche’s NCLC had embraced the “Unity Now” network that ventured into such a red-brown alliance between far-left and far-right, neo-nazi entities united against both communism and the Jews (Zionists).
The March 2, 1981 issue of Carto’s newspaper ‘Spotlight’ (Liberty Lobby} cynically defended the relationship this way:
It is mystifying why so many anti-communists and `conservatives’ oppose the USLP [U.S. Labor Party–LaRouche’s original electoral arm, ed.]. No group has done so much to confuse, disorient, and disunify the Left as they have… the USLP should be encouraged, as should all similar breakaway groups from the Left, for this is the only way that the Left can be weakened and broken.
RIGHT WOOS LEFT C Berlet, Feb.1999.
Carto was one of the most influential American anti-Semitic propagandists of the past 50 years. He is arguably the most important radical conservative in postwar America. Best known as the founder of the infamous ‘Liberty Lobby,’ he has been associated with nearly every significant far-right movement in the country, from neo-Nazism to militias, segregationism to Holocaust denial.
Moreover, just like American Lyndon married his German-born wife Helga Zepp in 1977, had American Willis Carto married his German-born wife Elisabeth Waltraud Oldemeir from Herford, Germany in November 1958.
